I saw Kim last night in Acorn Antiques at The Lowry in Salford. Without giving too much away about the plot(?!!) she plays Miss Bonnie, the hard-nosed businesswoman who wants to take over the shop and ends up sacking her own mother - cue plenty of boos and hisses from some of the audience (who'd obviously got lost looking for Aladdin in the adjoining theatre). She also takes the lead in the opening number, a Chicago pastiche celebrating the town of Manchesterford with Fosse style choreography complete with rubber gloves.
The show however, IMO, was a one joke five minute sketch stretched over two hours, the songs, as all Victoria Wood's songs were mildly amusing at the time but instantly forgotten and there was the occasional truly funny line. But I was never a huge fan of Victoria Wood's work on TV and as so many in the audience seemed to be splitting their sides with laughter, maybe I'm not the right person to judge.

I saw Kim in Acorn Antiques a couple of weeks ago in Leeds. I thought she was superb. She was unique in the cast of that show, in that she could sing AND act at the same time - something that none of the other characters could lay claim to, I would say!
I've never seen her as Tanya, but can totally imagine her in that part!
I'm with Iain on the review of the show though... I just didn't find it very funny. The songs seemed like a bit of an afterthought and some of the lead characters were just not likable!
I was, and still remain, totally confused by the opening sequence where Kim sings about "Manchesterford" but it is never mentioned again in the show! I loved the number - rubber gloves, dancing and all, but have no clue whatsoever how it tied into the rest of the show!
At the interval, I was ready to leave, but by the end of the show, I was somewhat converted... The audience seemed to love it and I found it funnier and the story moved along at pace in Act 2 in contrast to the first half.
I am intrigued to know what others thought of this show. Did anybody see it in London with Victoria Wood or Julie Walters? I just wonder what impact they had on the show?

I loved the number - rubber gloves, dancing and all, but have no clue whatsoever how it tied into the rest of the show! Well, there's a big metal "Manchesterford" sign over the set for starters. And several mentions of the Countess of Manchesterford in the first scene alone. There are other mentions throughout the script - something about the Manchesterford tramway somewhere. I'm with Iain on the review of the show though... I just didn't find it very funny. Maybe you didn't hear all the funny lines cos you weren't listening..? ;D

Okay... I probably didn't phrase it very well!
I did notice that we were in Manchesterford and that the place had some significance to the show!!!
What I did not understand was what that song had to do with anything?! I actually really liked that part, but I don't think it was ever explained why everybody donned rubber gloves and started singing about it for a TV advert or something! I thought it would all become clear at the end, but it did not.
You're obviously a fan though! Most people did indeed seem to find it funny, but it just wasn't my cup of Earl Grey.

I thought it would all become clear at the end, but it did not. There's no significance to it as far as I can make out. It's just a bit of fun. You're obviously a fan though! Most people did indeed seem to find it funny, but it just wasn't my cup of Earl Grey. I think it's one of those things that you just have to be in the mood for. I didn't split my sides - but given a choice of did you enjoy it or not, I did.

Poor Kim - Eastenders role not quite as glamorous as Tanya! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
