I've lost count of the number of different shows I've seen in London that I saw again on tour and found myself totally disappointed . And I have to say that Mamma Mia tonight was...........
.........definately not one of those shows. It's absolutely FREAKIN' AWESOME ;D ;D ;D
What a brilliant cast they have on the international tour.
Jackie Clune (I assume, cos she looked nowt like her programme pic) was a great Donna. Maybe more laid back than others I've seen but it worked well with the people playing Sophie and Sam (of whom more later).
Morag Siller a bubbly, Lorraine Kelly soundalike, played Rosie to comedic perfection and Joan Walker was a slender, toned, tanned, sexy, seductress as Tanya.
As for the three dads, Cameron Blakely as Sam showed polish and charm, Jeffrey Harmer was a suitably rugged Bill from the east end of London and I couldn't find fault with William Brand's Harry (and he can actually sing well!).
Katie Brayben as Sophie had a perfect chemistry with Craig Adams as a fun Sky (as opposed to Gareth D's "innocent" Sky or Fergus' "miserable git" Sky)
Not too sure, so far about Gregg Lowe and Alex Jessop as Pepper and Eddie. I didn't really think they were relaxed enough in their roles.
But it is only the second night for this cast as a whole.
Highlights - Slipping Through My Fingers was just beautiful, Take a Chance on Me was one of the best versions I've seen and the best bit of the night....the woman two rows in front spilling her drink all over herself when the start of act 2 took her slightly by surprise ;D
Some minor differences from the London production, most notable being the bagpipe joke being very low key and happening straight after the boys turn up drunk with no "Eddie, get your boat out" to preceed it so I think the joke was lost on quite a bit of the audience. I'm pretty sure the director will read this forum, so please, do it like the London show - it works much better!
To sum up then. It's a fantastic show with a superb cast ;D. Who needs London?
And best of all. It's the first time I've ever seen Mamma Mia and been able to sleep in my own bed in my own house at a decent hour ;D Good night!
