FOR THE RECORD IT WASN'T JUST ME THAT SCREAMED!!! THERE WERE "OTHERS" IN THE FRONT ROW!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D and now... here's an interview from a South African newspaper: Suanne Braun, who is officially the understudy to three of the main lead female roles, found herself suddenly thrown into the spotlight on the very night the show marked a very special milestone. “The actress who plays Tanya came down sick and all of a sudden I was on stage for this major event. To be part of the 7th Anniversary show was a luxury and so amazing,” explained Suanne. “We got a standing ovation, there was champagne backstage and I had to pinch myself – a South African in the middle of this huge West End success.” Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, Mamma Mia became a hit after writer Catherine Johnson developed the enchanting tale of family and friendship as it unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Fans come from all over the world to see the show. “Mamma Mia!” has already been seen by more than 27 million people in over 130 cities across North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. It has already grossed over $1.6 billion at the box office worldwide. The original London production opened in 1999 and has been seen by over 4 million people at over 2,900 performances, grossing over £145 million at the UK Box Office. For Suanne being part of this is a thrill. “As an understudy I am guaranteed to fill in for the roles I study when the performers take their holidays and on their days off.” Originally from Johannesburg Suanne moved to Cape Town to study at UCT before moving to Los Angeles 10 years ago. “It was there after a lot of foot slogging I started getting TV shows and ended up with roles on Just Shoot Me, The West Wing and Stargate SG1,” she said. It was Stargate SG1 which made her famous around the world with the shows fans because she played Goddess Hathor. “I was shocked with the response, there are websites dedicated to me and Goddess Hathor, and people still recognise me. Some people can be quite obsessive. I am proud of the role.” Love then intervened when Suanne met her husband and they moved to London. “I had to re-build my career and it was very tough. I’d show my headshots from LA to casting agents and they would say they were too glamorous. I learnt quickly that in the U.K. agents want wrinkles and ‘character’.” Ironically, Suanne has never been a big ABBA fan and just days before she tried out for the show, went and saw it. “I said to my husband that it would be a great show to work on as it looks like so much fun.” But the Mamma Mia producers are exacting taskmasters and after four or five auditions she got the gig. “Now I wake up singing Abba songs and couldn’t be happier.” Suanne lives in South London with her husband and says if you want to mirror her success, you should follow her top London success tips: 1. Get a good agent 2. Get involved in fringe theatre 3. Write to agents and producers and ask them to come see you perform 4. Get decent headshots 5. Know what the market wants 6. Be prepared to be disappointed She admits despite her U.K. success she misses the open spaces of South Africa, the smells and the blue sky. For those coming to London, she suggests everyone should see Mamma Mia, go to a free gallery like the British Museum and visit a market for the total London experience. As for “Mamma Mia!”, it’s extending its booking period at the Prince of Wales Theatre by a further eight months up until the 29 September 2007. Tickets for this new booking period are now on sale.

Quite a few of us ask that about Lucy too, and we've recently been asking the same thing about Suanne too...but it baffles me
