Tasha Sheridan by Mark Shenton
Tasha Sheridan Age: 24
Currently: Playing Sophie Sheridan, the daughter determined to discover who her father is on the eve of her marriage, in the long-running Mamma Mia! With her surname, you could say it was a role she was born to play. “Absolutely,” she agrees. “Before me we had Sophia Ragavelas playing Sophie, so that was close, too!”
Hometown: “I was brought up in a little village just south of Oxford, called Harwell,” Sheridan says. But though she loves her home town and the countryside, she’s now a fully paid-up city dweller. “I am definitely a city girl now!” she exclaims. “I love the buzz of London. I’ve been living in London for four—nearly five years now. I came here to go to drama school after my A Levels, and I’ve stayed ever since.” Until recently, she was living in Woolwich, but she has just moved to Brockley. “There are lots of hills and trees around, so it’s very nice—rather than seeing Belmarsh Prison outside my old house.”
Bitten by the Theatre Bug: Performing for a living wasn’t always what Sheridan wanted to do. “When I was younger, for as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a primary school teacher. But I loved musicals and going to the theatre and would watch Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music and Grease over and over again. I would have them on a loop all the time.” Then one day, she decided to try out the local drama club. “It wasn’t until I was about 14 that I joined the South Oxfordshire Youth Music and Drama Group, and I just loved it straight away.” Her first show with them was called The River People--a musical about the history of Abingdon, where the group was based. “It was quite good fun and a laugh, and it was from that I thought I could do this.” Then she joined the Oxfordshire Youth Music Theatre, where she began by playing Hortense in The Boy Friend. “I was with them for four years, and it was there that the director Judy said to me, ‘You know, Tash, you could go on and do this.’ Before I knew it, I was applying for places for drama school.” But she didn’t get into the Arts Educational School the first year she applied, “So I took a year out and did a lot of amdram.” The next year she was luckier, and at the age of 19, packed her bags and headed to London.
The Perfect Graduation Gift—A Job: “I spent three years on the diploma course that then turned into a degree course whilst I was there, so I got my nice little scroll at the end of it and my cap and gown celebration, which was all very good,” she says. But even better was getting her first West End job in Mamma Mia! “I graduated in July 2004, and I joined the ensemble here the following March,” she smiles. It was a great place to begin: “To be in the West End in my first job, in one of the most successful shows there is, was an absolute dream come true. And it’s the real cliché, especially with the chorus girl being bumped up to the lead!” How did that happen? “I was nearing the end of my ensemble year, and I was asked if I wanted to be considered for staying on. Originally I wanted to be seen for the first cover for Sophie—I never thought at all that they would turn around and give me the part, but they did! It was absolutely brilliant!”
A Fit of the Nerves: Not that moving up to the lead—and across the dressing room floor from a shared room with the rest of the ensemble to her own space—wasn’t without its challenges. “It was very, very scary, especially replacing Sophia Ragavelas. I mean, everyone knows who she is, and she had a huge following from Les Miserables, so I had some very big boots to fill. That was quite nerve-wracking. On our first day, I was petrified. We had an open dress for a whole audience of West End Wendy’s and it was terribly difficult—I was so nervous!” But that’s not typical for her. “Once I started doing shows, it just clicked with me, being onstage. Occasionally I will be onstage and think, there are 1200 people out there, oh my goodness! But because I feel so safe onstage, get me out there and I’m absolutely fine! Get me doing anything else, like a complicated maths problem, and that would overwhelm me. But I don’t like to think about what I’m doing too much. If you start to look at the bigger picture of just how many people are sat there watching you, it does become very scary!”
Thank You for the Music: Sheridan is too young to have known ABBA’s songs first time around. “I didn’t grow up with ABBA, but I’ve always known their songs. They have always been there, and you’ll always find me in the cheesy ‘70s rooms at clubs.” Does she have a favourite ABBA song? “In the show, I think ‘Slipping through my Fingers’ is one of my favourites; and of the songs I get to do, I’m very fond of ‘Lay All Your Love on Me’, and ‘The Name of the Game’ is a great number, too.” What about her own taste in music? “I love all types of music. I like soulful songs and good ole divas—you can’t beat Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I know everyone likes to knock them, but they do have absolutely phenomenal voices that you can’t help but listen to and think, the song might be a bit cheesy, but listen to the note you’re singing! I’m a big fan at the moment of Kelly Clarkson, I think she’s unreal. I saw her in concert a few months ago, and she’s like nothing else I’ve seen onstage—there’s absolutely no fear in her voice, she’s just rocking it out. If I could sing like her, I’d be a very happy person!”
Facing the Future: For now Sheridan hopes above all to keep “working, working, working.” But she is level-headed about the future. “Obviously I’ve got to be realistic, and I know that [working continually] doesn’t always happen, but I’d love to stay in musicals. They’re what I love doing because I love singing so much. But I’m so early on; I still need to learn my trade. I’ve been doing this for two years only, so I know nothing! There are people who have been around a lot longer than I have and know a lot more than I do, so I still need to go out there and keep working at it.” She’s not resting on her laurels—even though she’s working, she’s still keeping up her singing lessons. “It’s one thing for people to say I’ve got a great voice, but you’ve got to keep it maintained. It’s great singing these songs, but you don’t want to tire your voice out by only singing a certain kind of song for 12 months.” Singing has, she adds, “always come very easily to me. I am, touch wood, very blessed that I can open my mouth and the notes will come out.” But she’s honest about her own limitations: “I didn’t start dancing till I was 14 or 15, so if I’m honest I’m never going to be in the Cats chorus, but I can dance. It’s not my strongest thing, but it’s not the weakest, either!”

is mrs henderson presents any good? The film is very good, it was a joy to watch when I saw it some months ago (it opened here just this year), Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins are amazing! Oh, checked my 1&1 stats earlier: Tasha's domain has its one month anniversary lol and we had already nearly 400 visitors and over 2000 hits, not bad I'd say!
