I know I'm slow on the uptake on this one, but I've just joined the board, so you have to give me some slack! I love Evita. I think Madonna was excellent in the film version, which I must have seen approx 150 times, so I was very excited about this updated version coming to London. Amazingly, I only managed to persuade somebody to go see it with me whilst we were in London on a work trip a couple of weeks ago, and the show now definitely seems to be winding down. No Elena Roger. No Philip Quast. However... Had I not been expecting them, I would not have noticed their absense. The alternate Eva and understudy for Peron were amazing. What upset me more was the ruthless cutting of one of my favourite songs!!! Where was "The Lady's Got Potential" And what was with the dragged out death sequences? That said, I'm far too young to remember the earlier stage version ;D, so I'm not sure if these alterations were for the film and I might well get shot down here! Anyhoo, all in all, fantastic stage and setting, amazing cast, FAB dancing (except the homo-erotic weird guard fight thing during "The Art of the Possible") and a top night out. I can't believe they're replacing it with the much over-rated Joseph! If you've not been, GO SEE IT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! I might even try and drag somebody along before it closes in the hope of finally seeing Elena and finding out whether she lives up to the hype! ...Oh, and just as an aside... is it wrong that I totally fancied Matt Rawle?

Well.......i've been wanting to see this show for absolute ages!! SO! I finally booked up because i know its ending soon! So here goes... I went yesterday to the matinee. I have loved the film with Madonna for like ages so it's hard to beat it but i went in and tried not to compare the two....although i so wanted Madonna to take over at any minute!! Anyway....i found the whole show very emotional. I cried all the way through - or well, had tears in my eyes at least. I kept thinking, how come i'm crying at this and the last time i went to see MM i couldn't cry during STMF....? The show in general was great, however there were some parts that i thought were quite weak. Don't get me wrong, the sets, the ensemble, the choreography, everything was wonderful.....but i was a little disappointed with Elena Roger. Her voice when singing Don't Cry For Me Argentina and some of the others was incredibly strong and just brilliant......but in some of the songs, i couldn't really make out what she was singing. Purely down to the fact that she has a strong accent, i think. But that made things a bit hard for me. I also felt that she wasn't making that emotional connection with the audience, which i think is essential. When singing DCFMA for the first time, i felt it was too soon. I didn't feel that the people loved her yet, and suddenly she was asking them not to cry for her? I didn't get it. But moving swiftly on.....I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You - one of my fave songs in the film. I was again incredibly disappointed with it. Philip Quast during this song absolutely earned my love, i thought he was extremely strong and was just everything i wanted in my Peron. He continued to shine all the way through the show, he definitely impressed greatly. In IBSGFY i felt that Elena just wasn't convincing enough....i wanted to believe that she wanted to love this man and that together they would be so strong and plainly be good together, but i couldn't beleive it. Especially when he says "Are you here on your own" - i wanted Elena to respond like Madonna had "Yes...oh yes" as if suddenly no-one else mattered but instead she hit him back with a sharp and harsh "yes, YES!!" as if believe me, i'm not here with another man! I didn't like it. Next thing that hit me was DCFMA - when she shouts from the balcony "I am just a simple woman"...or something along those lines. I just couldn't believe it. She portrayed a greedy, money grabbing and fame wanting, woman who really couldn't care less for Argentina and who was just acting. Despite all this, Elena seemed to relate more to Eva in some parts of Act Two. When she started to deteriorate and become ill, this is where Elena really shone. Her vulnerablity in You Must Love Me was just so sad. I definitely cried through this. Philip Quast definitely helped her out though. Most of the songs and scenes after this i thought were great. When she stands on the balcony at the end as her coffin is laid centre stage and singings "The choice was mine and mine completely....etc" it was very emotional. All in all, despite all the criticism, i thought she was extremely good. Her tango dancing was brilliant, as with the rest of her dancing. Her voice was excellent even though i couldn't understand why they had given Elena the higher note in Goodnight and Thank You..... My special acheivement award goes to Lorna Want for her portrayal as the mistress. She showed real vulnerability and you really got the impression that she was frightened and didn't know where she would be next. She was just amazing, in my opinion. She had a truly excellent voice too. Brilliance. I'd also like to try and catch it one more time before the end, and catch the Eva understudy, who i think might be excellent.... I'd give it 8/10! Nat x

Glad you enjoyed Evita.
i liked the choreography from it and the music is classic. I borrowed the cast recording from my friend but i prefer the music from the movie.
hmm...it's closing soon...
